Few topics animate humanity, (including the family of God) more than race. We can debate theological truths, leadership dynamics, and/or political ballistics all day long, but nothing generates more strong objections, tears, and delirium than when the people of God hazard to confront our “racial stuff”.
What evoked more wild fervor than the dozen (plus) instances when Y’shua poked His Jewish brethren re the gentiles and Samaritans??
(Fact: Right now, many reading this post are either priming themselves for offense or emotionally hopeful about my merely mentioning the issue of race… C’mon now.)
This social/psychological observation should tell us how important our racial relationships are to the Kingdom – and to our King. As long as we think “we’re good” and sufficiently clean in this department; or worse yet, “regard (racial insensitivity) in our hearts” (Psalm 66:18), the Holy Spirit will not let us be at peace in communing with “the One Father of us all” (Ephesians 4:1).
There is also a great reward for us as we respond to the judgments of the Lord re: this issue. The Father has “commanded blessings” (Psalm 133) in store for us as we enter into authentic, clean, compassionate unity under the banner of His Son.
I’ve experienced this supernatural “blessing” on dozens of occasions over 40 years. When races engage in crucified repentance, contrition and celebration with each other the Father delights in clothing His family with His glory. For years I’ve also suspected that racial reconciliation is one of the Father’s big keys in unlocking revival in a region. The enemy fears this anointing like nobody’s business!
One of the most profound encounters I’ve had with the Father’s passion for racial reconciliation was in 1990 when I was serving as a teaching assistant for C. Peter Wagner at Fuller in Pasadena. Peter was teaching a two-week course on evangelism and discipleship with one-hundred pastors from various countries in attendance.
Throughout the sessions some of the Korean pastors were being offended by some of the statements being made by several Japanese pastors. After one particularly contentious episode Peter wisely called for a 15 minute break…
While the rest of the class grabbed coffee, or went for a walk, the Korean pastors gathered in the corner of the room and wept openly – and loudly. Soon their voices echoed through the garden that surrounded the seminar room.
At some point two courageous Japanese pastors re-entered the room and approached the Korean pastors. These two Japanese pastors tenderly knelt down before their brothers and asked them to forgive them and their fathers and their father’s fathers for the long, racial hatred, murder and subjugation that they had inflicted upon the Korean people. The wailing went up by fifty decibels.
When the rest of the class returned, we found the Japanese pastors and the Korean pastors all weeping together in one huddle. (One of the most powerful spiritual encounters I’ve ever witnessed.)
How do you re-engage 100 pastors in this kind of atmosphere???
Peter, again with great circumspection, asked if anyone would be willing to lead the class in worship. A pastor’s wife from Cameroon stood up WITH A GUITAR that SHE HAD JUST PURCHASED and began to sing us into an ocean of praise.
Quickly, the waves of the Father’s glory washed over the room; women and men lost in adoration, arms to heaven, on their faces on the floor… when suddenly, one of the large classroom lights inexplicably exploded overhead and rained glass and florescent powder down on the group.
Peter looked up and observed, “The enemy obviously doesn’t like what we’re doing…” He concluded with a wry smile: “Let’s keep exalting Jesus.”
Truth-be-told, the world has yet to face the greatest of all racial conflicts. And it WILL take the stage – front and center. At the end of the age the whole world will shake with the age-old ethnic strife of Jew vs. gentile. Furthermore, the sons and daughters of God will be shaken more than most (Hebrews 12:26-27).
(Philippians 2:9-11) tells us that billions of hearts will soon be charged to bow before a resurrected, very Hebrew God/Man. What’s more, this One is promised to rule from a very Jewish capital (Psalm 2:6). You can already feel how deeply offensive this race-based reality is in our world.
Beloved. It behooves us, pastors, teachers, fathers and mothers to take up His Word today; to enter into the chambers of His heart, and ask the Holy Spirit to show us the magnificently glorious vision He has for His entire family – from every tribe, and nation and tongue…
Imagine the day we experience the indescribable splendor of billions of “ta ethnos” hailing the (Revelation 5:5) Lion of the tribe of Judah with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. I can’t think of another Kingdom materiality that brings me to higher exultation.
But buckle-up beloved.
It WILL be a rocky ride getting there…
